HOUSE from WO RM
This house was one of the first things I conceptualized for WO RM. My biggest association with worms is coming home from elementary school on a rainy day and seeing dozens of them, coming out from the cracks in our black, steep driveway. There would always be at least a dozen dried up worms the following morning. Those memories and the very concept of worms are inextricably linked for me. I cannot think about worms without thinking about these creatures coming out from hiding, to chase the moisture of the rain, only to dry up and die in the aftermath.
The film begins with the house I grew up in, as I remembered it. It soon begins to rain, and the worms come out to feel. This film is all about the body/self and I wanted to explore that in this suburban home. The house is a mask that I gaze out of, and all of the worms are fingers– extensions of this home. They are all part of the same body, joined and whole.
I built three driveways and homes out of cardboard and papier mache. I wanted it to feel raw and childlike. I was able to fit myself and 9 other friends underneath those driveways.
The double sided finger ended up barely showing in the final edit. I made a double sided finger out of silicone based on my own finger. I sculpted it out of clay, made a mold, cast it in silicone, and then dressed it up with eye shadows.
This shot with the bird puppet was replaced with this shot to place more emphasis on the separation because I wasn’t able to achieve that violent rip with my live action puppets. It helped to transition into a purely animated world as well.
